How does DoneDefender work?

Before understanding how the DroneDefender works, we should know what this consists of. DroneDefender has the following elements:-

  • Software defined radio
  • Jamming circuitry
  • Picatinny rail mount

DroneDefender has two different type of defences. These are

  • Remote control drone disruption and
  • GPS disruption.

With a look of point and shoot system, this wonderful device works by firing a radio beam in a 30 ⁰ cone. After the radio beam is fired, DroneDefender jams the control and GPS navigation frequencies. As a result, DroneDefender disables drones which lies at a distance within 400 m.

Battelle has said that, “The system not only freezes the UAV, but also stops all outside control commands, including radio detonation signals.

The website of the developer has also said that, “DroneDefender utilizes a non-kinetic solution to defend airspace up to 400 m against UAS, such as quadcopters and hexacopters, without compromising safety or risking collateral damage.

Damm Stamm, the developer of DroneDefender has also given the basic idea by saying that, “It basically makes the drone think that it’s gone out of range. The drone enters into safety protocols which include one of the three options. It will either hover in position until the pilot can regain control link, it lands so that the pilot can recover it physically, or it returns to its point of origin.

Is DroneDefender currently being used?

No, the DroneDefender is not currently used but it has been successfully tested a number of times in the field. The system of DroneDefender is currently on show at the Association of the United States Army (AUSA). It has been reported that the company might start selling the DroneDefender from 2016 to federal authorities. The good news is that, the company will also be targeting foreign markets.
