We make resolutions, most of which we don’t follow, we buy new clothes, shoes, accessories and not to forget, new gadgets. The companies all over the world are certainly being generous by having an exciting line up of smartphone releases in 2016. There are new phones to lookout for or better, updated versions of your favourite smartphones. Without further ado, here is the list of smartphone releases in 2016 you certainly need to keep an eye out for.
Top 10 Smartphone Releases in 2016
Given as how apple introduces a new model of iPhone every even year and the “S” version of it the next odd year, it is expected iPhone7 will be released sometime around September this year. Rumours have been spreading for a while now and some of them go as follows. It is expected that the new iPhone would have the next gen A10 processor, a waterproof body and quite possibly no headphone jack.
Apple, in pursuit of getting thinner phones might remove the 3.5 mm headphone jack and use the Lighting port as a headphone jack as well. Which also adds fire to the rumour is, that the iPhone7 might have wireless charging since charging and listening to music can’t happen at the same time. All this and the sure comeback of 3D touch too, will be having apple fans placing this on the top of the list of smartphone releases in 2016.
2. Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge
Going by the trend of its predecessors, the launch of S7 will probably be in in Feb at the MWC 2016 and will be available in March. Samsung is said to be coming back with a whole arsenal of updates. Some of them being a distinctive improvement in the battery power from 2600 to a 3000 mAh for S7 and 3600 for S7 edge.
The phone will most likely decrease to a 12 MP camera so as to reduce the file size. It might also have a better aperture resulting in better low light photography. It looks like Samsung is fully geared up to fight its biggest competitor, Apple.
3. OnePlus 3
OnePlus 3 is expected to be released sometime in summer this year. Leaked photos in December of 2015 leave some clues and puzzles as to what OnePlus has in store for us. It is shown to have front facing speakers and a black brushed steel back instead of the signature sandstone back. There also seems to be a change in the placement of the finger print scanner and will be powered by Snapdragon 820 chip. Further info is not available as of now.
4. Google Nexus 6 2016
Google is possibly collaborating with Huawei again to release the Nexus 6 2016. It is rumoured to have the Snapdragon 820 chip. No surprise there, since it seems to be the popular choice for smartphone releases in 2016. It is also believed to launch Android N OS and a 5.7 inch display, which leans more towards a Phablet. This will most likely be unveiled at the Google IO, so somewhere around May or June.
5. LG G5
The G4 was one of the favourites last year and LG just might release its next model, G5 during the MWC 2016. It boasts an impressive host of specs, including the Snapdragon 820 processor, 3GB RAM, a back camera of 16 MP and a front camera of 8MP. G5 is sticking with the Quad HD resolution and not showing any indication of switching to 4k for now.
6. Sony Xperia Z6
Sony’s flagship release for 2016 will probably be Xperia Z6 and Z6 Compact. Judging by the size of its predecessor Z5, this phone will probably have a 5.3 inch Triluminous LED hosting a display of 2K resolution. It will presumably have a 4GB RAM and the rear camera might upgrade to 25 MP from the prior 23 MP. We are looking at another Snapdragon 820 processor and a MWC 2016 release.
7. Xiaomi Mi6
Xiaomi is gonna be available for the whole world for the first time ever. With it’s affordable prices and some possible new features, it just might as well be the new fan favourite. The rumour mill has been spinning up talks like a iris scanner instead of a finger print, and even wireless charging could be the new features. There seems to be an improvement in the camera up to 23 MP for the rear and a 7 MP for the front camera.
Not to forget, the memory can be expanded to 128 GB, that is without already considering the standard 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB of storage. This flagship seems like it will provide some interesting competition for the big guns like Apple, Samsung or Sony.
8. Microsoft Surface Phone
There have been a few hints left here and there that made it seem like Microsoft Surface Phone is in the making. The addition of all these tit bits might indicate the Surface Phone might be launched sometime in the later half of 2016. Now if this phone is in fact released, it might work as the flagship for Microsoft, that is compatible in running the desktop apps.
The only possible design concept on how the phone might look like and work was created by Nadir Aslam. This, although not the actual model, gives us an idea on how it might be, and boy, does it sound gripping!
9. Nextbit Robin
Finally we have something we know concrete information about as this phone got launched in September last year. On a site like kick starter, where most of the projects don’t seem to make sense, this one stood out exceptionally. Here, we have a startup Nextbit, ready to release there first smartphone on Feb 16, 2016.
Now the main feature that Robin is selling on is its vast cloud storage. This phone can transfer photos, videos and even apps that are little used to a cloud storage of 100 GB, other than the inbuilt 32 GB storage. The aim is to never run out of storage. In a age where even 64 GB doesn’t seem enough, this sounds real appealing.
10. Project Ara
We saved the most interesting for the last. This certain project, supported by Google, is an attempt at modular smartphone. It is certainly not the first but looking the way it is proceeding, it will be the most affordable and fortunately the most successful.
A modular smartphone, in simple terms, means we can change certain components of the phone according to our will while the skeleton of the phone remains the same. Now these components are not the usual ones like, SIM’s or SD cards but even cameras or speakers. There are even a whole couple of attachments like laser pointers, night vision sensors and game control buttons that will only be possible by Project Ara.
With qualities like these, this modular phone looks like the most interesting smartphone releases in 2016. You follow the regular updates of Project Ara on various social media platforms and it even has a website of its own if you want to check it out.
So there you have it, the list of top 10 smartphone releases in 2016 to lookout for. Many of the information that has been gathered till now are rumours and tend to change at any moment. But the rumours calculated based on already available knowledge spark some major excitement and a lot of curiosity.
